Movie Vampire to Be New Kolchak Stuart Townsend to chase ghost & ghouls in new pilot. by KJB March 4, 2005 - Stuart Townsend, previously seen as Anne Rice's vampire protagonist in Queen of the Damned and as Dorian Gray in the film adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, has been tapped to play Jeff Rice's intrepid reporter that faces the supernatural, Carl Kolchak. The new pilot for The Night Stalker is being produced by former X-Files Executive producer, Frank Spotnitz, and was commissioned by ABC, who is eager to find the next big supernatural franchise. The evidence of tinkering with the concept is evident just by the casting notices: Kolchak has been given a "partner" to be played in the pilot by Gabrielle Union, soon to be seen in the re-make of the television classic, The Honeymooners. Still left to be cast is Kolchak's long suffering editor yet staunchest supporter, Tony Vincenzo. The original Kolchak: The Night Stalker series ran on ABC from September, 1974 to August of 1975. The pilot films, which ran on ABC's late night schedule, held records for television movie ratings for years and a series was inevitable. While the series didn't live up to the promise of the pilot movies, it still had its fans that appreciated the the series' take on the supernatural and Darren McGavin's portrayal of the seedy, single minded reporter, Carl Kolchak. Tooling around Chicago (he'd been thrown out of Las Vegas and Seattle in the two TV movies that preceded the series) in his late 60's yellow Mustang convertible equipped with a police scanner, Kolchak would find himself in the middle of all sorts of weirdness and became the most unlikely protector of the public. The series has seen something of a revival in recent years thanks to a series of graphic novels published by Moonstone Comics and a re-release of the two television movies from Universal. X-Files creator Chris Carter wanted to work the character into the series but found licensing the character to be difficult, resulting in the creation of the character "Arthur Dales," a former FBI agent that was responsible for the creation of the X-Files within the Bureau.

Catherine Rawlins, a call girl who was a victim of Janos Skorzeny (the vampire from the original Night Stalker TV movie) rises outside Las Vegas and makes her way to Los Angeles, where she begins her own killing spree.
The L.A. police downplay the murders as the work of devil-worshippers, but Kolchak gets a tip about the new string of vampire murders and wrangles a trip to Los Angeles. A local contact helps Kolchak find Rawlins. Kolchak loses his cross when the vampire attacks him, but he lures her up a hill to a giant cross that overlooks Los Angeles and sets it on fire. Rawlins is paralyzed in the light of the cross, and Kolchak stakes her.
The L.A. police send Kolchak back to Chicago, but not before he confirms that the autopsy report shows that Rawlins had been dead for more than three years at the time he had allegedly "killed" her.

| Night Stalker, starring Stuart Townsend as a crime reporter tracking the supernatural, lasted six episodes on ABC and averaged just 5.3 million viewers.
But on May 30, Night Stalker arrives on DVD (Buena Vista, no price yet) with four unaired episodes plus the six that were shown.
"For everybody who does what I do, you hope you have life beyond network television, and DVD provides that," says Frank Spotnitz, the show's executive producer and writer. "It's television's equivalent of immortality: You get to stay on retail shelves and in home libraries."
He feels vindicated that all 10 episodes will be on the DVD: "The last four are among the best we ever did."
There's no word on whether other ratings casualties, including Heather Graham's Emily's Reasons Why Not, which was axed after ABC aired just one of six episodes, or CBS' Love Monkey, which died after four, will be released on DVD.
But past cases indicate there's a good chance they will.
"I think pretty much every canceled show is going to make its way to DVD," says Gord Lacey, who runs the website TVShowsonDVD.com.
The fan base for TV DVD has become so rabid that a broadcast bomb can become a DVD diva, Lacey says. Some studio executives say sales are approaching $4 billion a year, or nearly one-quarter of the DVD business.
Take Family Guy, the rude animated series canceled after less than three years on Fox.
Three DVD box sets sold more than 6 million units. After the spectacular sales, as well as solid ratings for reruns on Cartoon Network's late-night Adult Swim, Fox took the unprecedented step of putting the show back in production and on the network.
"(The DVD) energized the fans and brought new ones into the fold," Fox's Steve Feldstein says.
Granted, Family Guy wasn't an immediate network kill, but Lacey says even shows that last only a few episodes have DVD potential.
Love Monkey, about a thirtysomething music executive, was axed after the fourth episode drew 5.4 million viewers.
"If you can translate that to just 10% sell-through, that's more than half a million DVDs," Lacey says.
Shout! Factory has released several short-lived series on DVD, including the critical favorite Freaks and Geeks, which ran from 1999 to 2000 on NBC.
"It had just under the needed ratings to stay on the air," Shout's Garson Foos says. "But it's an amazing show, and the people who are into it are almost evangelical. Plus many cast members have gone on to do big things, including James Franco and Linda Cardellini."
Shout! Factory also has released one-season wonders Significant Others from 2004 (12 episodes) and All-American Girl (19 episodes), the 1994 comedy series starring Margaret Cho.
Says Foos: "Some one-season shows are legendary and clearly have a large cult audience. Others have cast members who have gone on to become bigger stars, and the audience is interested in seeing their earlier work."
